Mermaids is a UK ‘charity’ that promotes transgenderism to children and adolescents. We put the word charity in quotes because we see no charitable benefit in helping young people damage themselves.
In September 2022, The Telegraph published an article alleging that Mermaids offered to send breast binders to children against their parents’ wishes.
Later that month, Mermaids was the focus of a slew of newspaper articles that called into question its safeguarding policies, prompting the Charity Commission to open a “regulatory compliance case”. This is not a formal investigation, and it is not a finding of wrongdoing. However, pending the commission’s scrutiny, a number of organizations have paused their relationships with Mermaids – the National Lottery Community Fund has suspended future payments and the Department for Education has removed it from its mental health and wellbeing resources for schools.
On November 25, 2022, Susie Green, the CEO of Mermaids, resigned from the organization due to issues in relation to her leadership of the organization. Susie Green facilitated the castration of her son at age 16. She has not faced justice for this crime.
On December 2, 2022, the Charity Commission escalated its investigations into Mermaids, responding to “newly identified issues” about the charity.
