Dr Jillian Spencer is a psychiatrist at the Queensland Children’s Hospital who takes a cautious approach to the care of young people with transgender ideation.

She is currently suspended from her role amid accusations of ‘transphobia’.

Dr Spencer is a signatory to the National Association of Practising Psychiatrists’ guide to managing gender dysphoria and incongruence in young people, which advocates a cautious approach and comprehensive mental health assessment.

Senior child psychiatrist stood down after questioning gender medicine. The affirmation model for children with gender dysphoria supports the social transition of children (opposite sex name, clothing, and pronouns), the off-label prescription of ‘puberty blockers’ from Tanner Stage II (age 10 to 12) followed by the off-label prescription of cross-sex hormones. Some surgeries, such as double mastectomy, are occurring in Australia under age 18.

Dr Spencer has subsequently taken issue with ABC ‘Four Corners’ labeling its coverage ‘irresponsible’. The programme framed a suicide as resulting from a lack of access to opposite-sex imitation treatment.

‘I just need to let parents know that the risk of death for children with gender dysphoria is the same as that with children with other mental health problems,’ she said.
